Wirrimbirra Native Flora & Fauna Sanctuary
Wirrimbirra Sanctuary aims to foster an awareness of the unique natural and cultural heritage of Australian wildlife and environment and also to promote conservation of these values through being a centre of excellence in environmental education and research.
Just over and hour's drive from Sydney, Wirrimbirra was created in the 1960's by Thistle Harris in memory of her late husband David Stead, to preserve native bushland and to promote the use and propogation of Australian native plants.
Bushwalking
Wirrimbirra is an Aboriginal word meaning 'Protected Place'. The nearby bushland tracks offer short gentle stolls and shady resting places. For the bush walking enthusiasts, longer self-guided walks are reknowned for their rugged beauty in this 90 hectare park.
Whichever you choose, you may see a variety of birds, animals and plants which are all unique to the local area. Each season brings special sights, sounds and smells.
Fauna Protection Area
Come and meet the residents in our Fauna Protection Area. This was opened in 1997 to provide a sanctuary for native animals and is a secured environment for habitat research.
